How to Make Your Home More Attractive with a Concrete Overlay

When one thinks of concrete, they typically imagine a drab, gray floor. This type of flooring is common in warehouse stores, but these retailers use concrete as a cost cutting measure; it is cheaper than linoleum. However, a concrete overlay is an incredibly cost effective way to get a beautiful floor in any application. In the home, this option is becoming more and more viable. The results will astound you and the cost of an engineered layer of concrete is similar to the price of tile.

As you known, many millionaires have beautiful marble floors throughout their homes. It is no secret that marble is beautiful, but it is also incredibly expensive. There are companies that make concrete and polymer resin mixtures that mimic marble at a price point that the average consumer can handle. These companies use the polymer to help bind the overlay to the existing concrete as well as to change the properties of the concrete; allowing it to be more flexible so it does not crack with temperature and humidity changes in the home. Most importantly, the process allows the concrete to get the look, color, and shimmer of marble.

Various thicknesses are possible with these overlays; they can be several inches thick or as thin as a credit card. The end result is very durable, as the polymer and concrete mixture sticks well to the existing slab. In fact, even the floors at those above mentioned warehouse stores have a concrete overlay on top of the slab. This overlay is what gives that top layer of concrete the shine. These are floors that have stood up to years of abuse, wear, and tear; without showing it. The overlay is also resistant to most chemicals, salt and UV exposure, making it perfect for even outdoor applications.

A rising trend in modern homes is concrete and concrete overlay countertops. Because of concrete’s inherent strength and the overlay’s durability and ability to mimics the properties of other materials, it makes for an incredibly durable countertop that can look like anything. Some home owners intentionally stain the concrete to keep the concrete look while others use an overlay to make the counter top look like marble or granite. While both granite and marble make for great countertops, neither offers the durability and strength of concrete.  Concrete is also more resistant to stains and odors compared to marble and granite countertops.
